As a family and cosmetic dentist based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Roderick Garcia, DMD, strives to give patients the healthiest and most aesthetically pleasing smile possible. When he isn’t working as a dentist, Roderick Garcia, DMD, enjoys watching professional football and is a fan of the Green Bay Packers.

When one speaks of the all-time great Green Bay Packers, certain names immediately come to mind such as quarterbacks Bart Starr, Brett Favre, and Aaron Rodgers. There are other players, however, who have made significant contributions to the franchise but for one reason or other haven’t received as much praise from fans and the media. William Henderson is one such Packers great.

Henderson spent 12 seasons in Green Bay at the fullback position. In nine of those years, running backs amassed 1,000 yards rushing behind his powerful blocking. He also caught 320 passes out of the backfield during his career and was a member of the 1996 team that would go on the win the Super Bowl. Near the end of his career, Henderson was finally recognized for his high-level play as a Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro selection.

Purpose and Structure of the Dental Crown

At his dental practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Roderick Garcia, DMD, offers a variety of cosmetic and treatment services. Roderick Garcia, DMD, includes crowns as part of his standard suite of restorative dentistry offerings.

Placed on top of a weak or damaged tooth, a dental crown provides protection as well as extra structural strength. A dentist often recommends a crown to keep a decayed or cracked tooth from breaking or to restore a tooth that has minimal existing structure. Crowns may also provide aesthetic correction for discolored, badly shaped, or implant-replaced teeth.

A crown may consist of stainless steel, particularly for children who will ultimately lose the covered tooth. Permanent crowns more often involve alloys, such as gold and silver, as these withstand the stress of use and are unlikely to crack.

Some patients prefer to have a more natural-looking crown. In such a case, the laboratory that creates the crown may fuse porcelain on top of a metal base, so as to keep the stability of metal while improving aesthetics. The laboratory can match the porcelain’s color to the patient’s teeth, though some of the metal base may still show through at the gum line.

Patients who cannot tolerate metal or who do not want any metal visible in a crown may opt for full porcelain or ceramic crowns. Although generally a better match in color than options with an underlying metal structure, solid zirconia crowns have minimal wear and are less likely to crack.
