When the pulp, the soft inner structure of a tooth, becomes infected or inflamed it may be necessary to perform a root canal. Infection or inflammation may be due to a number of causes such as deep decay, a crack in the tooth, or a faulty crown. An untreated infection or inflammation can result in pain or an abscess (pus due to bacteria, which in rare instances can be life threatening).

The pulp is the soft tissue inside the tooth just under the dentin (a hard layer) and the outer white enamel. Nerves, connective tissues, and blood vessels make up the pulp and aid in the growth of the tooth during the development stage. When the tooth is fully formed surrounding tissues continue to nourish it, thus it can survive without the pulp.

A root canal treatment involves removing the pulp and cleaning the inside of the tooth and sealing it. While many fear that a root canal will be painful, most people say the experience is similar to having a tooth filled. Most of the anxiety comes from seeking the treatment and not the treatment itself.
